THE DATE – Everything moves slow – until it doesn’t!

Just a couple of weeks ago,  I shared the details with you about Judy’s 2nd brain aneurism.    Both Judy and I appreciated everyone’s kind words and thoughts and I can assure you that they are helpful in situations like this when you are trying to get your thoughts in the right place.   I committed to keep everyone update, so here is the latest….

After much anticipation, anxiousness and meetings with the doctors we now have a firm date for Judy’s  “Intervention Surgery”. Tuesday June 20th.   We met with the Neuro-radiology surgeon yesterday Dr. Daniela Iancu.    Both Judy and I left the hospital with a very good feeling that Judy would be in good hands and get nothing but the best results.     We have one more visit with the anesthesiologist on Monday the 19th, and then a good nights sleep at home in her own bed and Judy will be ready for a 6:30 am check in at The Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus).

It is expected that Judy will only be hospitalized for 48 hours (amazing!) and then home for some recovery time.  I will get to hone an practice my nursing skills again – let’s hope for a cooperative patient.    Given our experience from the last aneurism (that one was a burst), and suggestions from the docs,  the recovery should be in the 2 week +/- range, but then Judy will be on some heavy blood thinners for 3 months to ensure that clotting doesn’t happen as a result of the new device – a stent or a flow diverter.

The doctor will make the final decision as to the procedure to use based on views from an angiogram that will be done with the surgery.   The 2 options are:

  1. Stent Assisted Coiling
  2. Flow Diverter

Follow up will include regular doctor visits initially and then in 3 months time another angiogram to ensure that everything is in place and no clotting is occurring because of the inserted stent, coil or flow diverter.

My next update will follow after Surgery on the 20th.

Jean, thanks for your kind words. I like ‘recovery coach’ vs ‘nurse ratched’. We will keep everyone posted after surgery and throughout recovery.
